Admitted Students Checklist

Congratulations on your acceptance! By going to college, you're setting yourself up to succeed and to create change in your community and the world. Here are your next steps in becoming a Bear.

Step 1

  1. Complete your FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is your crucial first step in receiving financial aid. UNC's school code is 001349. The FAFSA opens October 1 each year, so don't delay!

Colorado students also need to apply for the College Opportunity Fund, which enables you to pay the lowest possible in-state tuition rate. Learn more about the COF.

  2. Activate your Ursa account

Ursa is where you'll register for classes, access classroom resources, find your transcripts, pay your bill and much more. You'll need your Bear Number to activate your account, which can be found on your acceptance letter (you can also look up your Bear Number online).

We also send important information to your BearMail account, so be sure to check that often. This is also how professors and advisors will contact you.

  3. Join our Admitted Students Facebook group

Meet fellow future Bears, find out why they are choosing or considering UNC, find a roommate and get connected with others with similar interests.

Step 2

  1. Submit your enrollment confirmation deposit

Once you've decided to attend UNC, confirm your space with a $200 nonrefundable deposit. Fall admits should confirm by May 1 or, if you're admitted after May 1, within two weeks of acceptance.

  2. Apply for campus housing

Explore your housing options online, maybe take a residence hall tour, and then complete your application and submit your $100 housing deposit. The housing application opens October 6, and the sooner you apply, the better chance you have of getting one of your top preferences.

  3. Attend Destination UNC

UNC has a variety of admitted student events to help you make your final decision. One of the best choices for admitted students is Destination UNC, a full-day event where you can eat in a dining hall and explore the academic and student-life side of being a Bear. Other visit options include Daily Tours, Coffee Chats, or, if you can't make it in person, our virtual tour.

Step 3

  1. Check Your Financial Aid

After submitting your FAFSA, you'll receive a Preliminary Award letter. Preliminary Award letters will be available mid-December for new students who have all required paperwork completed by December 1. Official Award letters will be mailed out in March to all students who complete the FAFSA and all required paperwork. Check your Ursa account regularly for financial aid updates and notifications during your entire college process.

The UNC Scholarship Application opens November 1. The deadline for first-year and continuing students is March 1. You can apply through your Ursa account. You'll want to complete the FAFSA and the UNC Scholarship Application every year. We also encourage you to look for outside scholarships to lower your costs.

  2. Attend New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation is a two-day summer event where you'll register for classes, meet many of your classmates, get your student ID and more. You won't be able to make your reservation until after you make your enrollment confirmation deposit. At that point, you'll receive more information about how to sign up for orientation (registration opens mid-spring). If you're a transfer student, you'll also have the opportunity to attend orientation online.

Step 4

  1. Complete the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment

The ALEKS Math Placement Assessment is how UNC determines your placement for entry-level math and statistics courses. You don't need to take this exam until after you have made your enrollment confirmation deposit.

  2. Submit your immunization records

You must submit your immunization records before you can register for classes.

  3. Submit the student health insurance waiver

If you enroll in nine or more credit hours, you'll automatically be enrolled in the UNC-sponsored health insurance plan unless you provide documentation that you have comparable insurance by the 10th day of classes of the semester you start. You can submit your health insurance waiver via your Ursa account.

  4. Purchase a parking pass

If you'll have a car while you're at UNC, you can buy your parking pass through your Ursa account (the option will be listed under the “Financial” tab).

  5. Submit your final transcripts

Once you've graduated, ask your high school to send your final official transcript, complete with your final GPA and graduation date, to UNC's Office of Admissions (either electronically or by mail — see our contact info).

To get credit for AP/IB/concurrent courses, send those transcripts or scores to the Office of Admissions.
